International construction faces tremendous challenges, and at the same time, great opportunities for those architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) firms operating at a global level. Today’s construction market is worth an estimated $7.5 trillion. By 2020, it will be an estimated $12.7 trillion – 70% growth. Emerging construction markets in Asia and Pacific will grow by an estimated 125% by 2020 (Global Construction Perspectives & Oxford Economics) China is predicted to take over the US as the largest construction market by 2018 and be worth $2.4 trillion by 2020. India will overtake Japan by 2020 to become the 3rd largest global construction market. Growth in emerging markets is predicted to outpace developed countries
Large construction and infrastructure projects in developing countries such as Latin America and the Far East have been commissioned as a result of attempts to increase the competitiveness of industries in these regions and to attract foreign investment. In developed countries it is a need to upgrade or replace older facilities. Construction firms expanding to other parts of the world may need to work on understanding very different business cultures and environments.
Pressure on public spending is generating downward pressure on margins. Client’s demands for lower priced contracts are forcing firms to restructure their marketing strategies and approaches to pricing.
E-commerce is changing the way in which business is carried out by altering tendering processes and stimulating new approaches to project collaboration. Novel approaches to client handling through the use of partnering arrangements have been developed.
Global construction is quite fragmented with many AEC firms attempting to be dominant in specific niches. Focusing on the creation of an international network of contacts, the AEC firms are attempting to better target their marketing efforts.
Public Private Partnerships (PPP)/Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) will continue to grow internationally.
Continuing globalization, urbanization, population growth and mass migration will increase emphasis on the importance of delivery of intelligent infrastructure.
Focus will continue to be on good project management, quality, on-time performance, partnering arrangements and managing disputes, in order to improve effectiveness of relations between the project stakeholders. However, delivering value to a much broader range of stakeholders is becoming crucial, given increased concerns about corporate governance and climate change.
